Campaign held over closure of Barclays Bank branch in Norwich …
A campaign has been held against plans to close a Norwich branch of Barclays Bank, which they fear will hit the elderly the hardest.
The Colman Road branch closed for business today, and people who don t have access to internet banking now fear they re not going to be able to manage their money. Bert Bremner, of the University Ward Labour Party group, handed in a petition to the branch yesterday and will also be emailing it to the bank s head office.
He feels it s important for Barclays to realise what the branch means to local people. He said: Colman Road is a very busy route and people use this branch all the time. The reality of this situation is that it will separate a section of society.
A large proportion of people in Norwich can t use Internet banking and they depend on that branch to pay bills and draw pensions.
A spokesman for Barclays said: The decision to close Colman Road, Norwich branch has not been taken lightly and we appreciate that it will cause some inconvenience.
We will work hard to minimise the impact on customers and will help them with the change to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.
