Door Supervisor training courses classes Hotcourses

It might seem unusual, but door supervisor courses are on the increase as more and more individuals choose to work in the security industry. Door supervisors work to maintain the security of customers in pubs, nightclubs and licensed venues all over the country. As all jobs in the security industry, both the working hours and job description can be challenging, so there are a number of things to consider before signing up to a training course. What s more, in order to legally work as a door supervisor in the UK, you will need to pass a course and apply for the SIA Door Supervision license.1234

Why do I need to do a course?

By law, unless a company or employer has been given exception, it is a criminal offence to undertake the activities of a door supervisor without a license.

Door supervising requires you to make quick judgements to guarantee the safety of yourself and others, so training is a must5. Some courses will require you to attend an interview before enrolling, and most will have a minimum age requirement of 18, as you cannot apply for your license until you reach this age. The license will cost 220 and last for three years, but cannot be applied for without completion of Level 2 National Certificate in Door Supervision.

There are two parts of most training courses6 and the entire training will last approximately 30 hours, including two exams.

In this time you will cover general health and safety and fire information. Unlike working in an office, there are legal requirements that must be covered before getting the job, such as understanding elements of civil and criminal law, drug legislation and licensing laws. In certain circumstances door supervisors will need to work with the police to report incidents or preserve a crime scene, so this will usually be covered on a course.

As a door supervisor7, the members of the public you deal with will often not be the easiest to reason with after having a drink, so communication skills and conflict management is vital. A course8 will help you learn how to assess and reduce the risk of conflict, as well as how to communicate in a way that deescalates the situation.

What will I do on the job?

Before signing up to a training course9, it s a good idea to find out more about what you will be doing when you get the job.

As a door supervisor your duties can include judging the security of people entering the premises, maintaining order, watching behaviour and safe guarding the well being of customers in the premises. When working in a large venue your role could also include elements of crowd management, avoiding crushing and queue jumping. You will work closely with the police, first aiders and management of the venue.

As a door supervisor10, you have the power to arrest a member of the public seen possessing drugs or weapons on the premises, before handing them over to the police.

Searching

When working on the security team for venue entry, you may be required to search bags, collect tickets and ask for ID as customers enter the premises. Yet laws state that under no circumstances can door supervisors forcibly search anyone, and full strip searches are never to be carried out by door staff. As a condition of entry it is acceptable to insist on pat down searches, although for your own safety it is recommended that you only ever search someone of the same sex.

Physical intervention
Door supervisors11 need to be physically fit, as part of the job involves restraint techniques when removing unruly people from the venue.

A course12 will help develop the skills needed for this part of the job, ensuring you follow the correct procedure. Before exerting physical force, you should explain what rule they have breached, and inform them that if they do not leave you will have to call the police. The law states you should use no more force than necessary and once the ejected customer is on the street, you have no power over them and any forceful behaviour could be seen as a crime.

Reading non-verbal communication

Aggressive behaviour is not always verbal, so you will need to be vigilant to all forms of communication. A training course13 may cover how to recognise hostile signals and avoid conflict.

Another part of the job is being able to control the signals and messages you give out with your own body language, remaining calm and assertive when removing people from the premises.

Am I right for this job?

In order to succeed as a door supervisor14 you will need to be able to control your anger and have the ability to make decisions quickly. The job requires you to work with angry and unreasonable members of the public, so patience and the ability to hold your tongue is a must! You will need to be able to make fair judgements of people and not discriminate against age, sex or race.

Working hours will depend on the venue but you will be required to work at busy times, so working as a door supervisor will often involve evening and weekend work making it a great part time job.

As mentioned above, being physically fit is important as you will be standing outside for long periods of time.

You will also be expected to work outside in all weathers and inside in hot, noisy and smoky conditions.

Income

Door supervisors are usually paid hourly and will earn 8- 13 per hour.

To search for more door supervisor training courses15 use our site, and filter by price and location to find the best one for you.

With plenty of part time and evening options available, we are sure you will find something to meet your needs.

IT Security

Defend your IT systems with risk-resistant
solutions from IBM

The continuous proliferation of malicious code and expanding hacker sophistication are formidable challenges. For medium size companies the IT security risks are enormous. Focused on their core business, many adopt a “set it and forget it” policy, leaving systems and data open to exposures from viruses, malware, hackers, and more.

With liabilities ranging from catastrophic downtime to non-compliance penalties, organisations must approach IT security as a continuous, company-wide business discipline. The very nature of today’s security threats leaves little margin for error, so the most effective security management strategy will be pre-emptive.

IBM s IT security expertise can help any business develop, implement and maintain comprehensive, adaptable strategies to combat the proliferation and expanding sophistication of malicious attacks without increasing complexity, cost, or resources required for administration. Security threats are always evolving–be sure that your security system can evolve to fight them.

Man Found Guilty Of Norwich Hotel Rape

19th July 2013, 22:28

A 21 year old man has been found guilty of raping a woman in Norwich city centre after she got split up from her friend on a night out.

Andrew Oruovo found guilty of Norwich rape

Andrew Oruovo, of Thameshead, Kent, was convicted by a jury at Norwich Crown Court today Friday 19 July 2013 following a five-day trial.

The court heard how Nigerian born Oruovo had approached the 24-year-old victim during the early hours of Saturday 21 April 2012.

The woman had been on a night out in the city with a group of friends, but had become separated, and after being refused entry to a nightclub had ended up on her own in the Prince of Wales Road area of the city.

Oruovo started to talk to the victim, who had been drinking heavily, and after a short time walked her to a nearby hotel where he raped her.

Following the incident the victim escaped the hotel and was found by a passer-by who called the police.

Det Sgt Catherine Twiss, of Norfolk Constabulary’s Rape Investigation Unit, said: “Oruovo took advantage of a young woman who had clearly had a lot to drink and was in a vulnerable state.

“The fact Oruovo pleaded not guilty meant she has had to relive her experience in the court room which has proven an immensely stressful experience.”

Oruovo was remanded in custody to appear in court on Friday 9 August 2013 when he will be sentenced.

Det Sgt Twiss added: “The victim in this case has been incredibly brave and we hope this result will encourage other victims of violence and serious sexual assault to contact us.

SIA warns of job scams

SiaSamp The Security Industry Authority (SIA11) is working with the City of London Police s22 National Fraud Intelligence Bureau to raise awareness of an online scam. It involves phoney online adverts offering training or jobs in private security, using the names of real employees within genuine recruitment agencies.

After submitting a CV, someone is offered a job and requested to pay an up-front fee of around 50, through an online money transfer, to carry out a criminal records check or uniform fitting.

After paying the fee, the recruitment agent may then claim that the e-money payment has failed and that the victim must submit a further e-money voucher code to continue with the application; this extra step is purely to maximise the fraudster s gain after seeing the victim is interested.

The victim is then asked to attend an interview or induction session, at a multi-purpose business venue, such as a conference centre.

The company offering employment is later found not to exist or the genuine recruiter has no knowledge of the contact details used by the suspects.

There are steps that you can take to ensure that offers for training or jobs are real, these include:

Research the company offering the service, check their website for contact details and make contact with them.- Be aware of advertisements with free e-mail addresses such as Gmail or Hotmail.- Be aware of any advertisement requesting payment upfront, especially through online methods using e-money payments.- Research the training company using the SIA s training provider search tool on the SIA website.

The Security Industry Authority points out that the cost of a criminal records check is included in the SIA licence application fee.

Artists Respond to Grammy Nominations Rolling Stone

Last night’s Grammy nominations announcements brought both the expected (Adele, Kanye and Lady Gaga) and the unexpected (Bon Iver and Mumford & Sons getting nods in both the Record and Song of the Year categories). But no moment brought about more of a “holy shit!” response than 23-year-old Dubstep favorite Skrillex, who broke into the prestigious Best New Artist category alongside Nicki Minaj and country success story the Band Perry.

Skrillex’s nomination, the first in that category for a dance artist, was hailed by L.A. DJ Jason Bentley1 as “a historic event for electronic music” on his Twitter.

Count Skrillex (real name Sonny Moore) among those who were blown away. Talking to Rolling Stone this morning, he said, “It s now just starting to hit me.”

Landing five nominations still seems unreal to him. “I didn t even think it was ever possible for any nomination maybe Dubstep Music Awards, which happened this year in London. But I didn t think I would have any nominations for anything like Grammys,” said Moore.

Moore’s surprise was totally justified, but 2011 performer Bruno Mars told press backstage he wasn’t so shocked by his six nods. “What do you think I’m doing this for fun?” he quipped.

Getting serious, he said he was very happy with “Grenade” being chosen in both the Record and Song of the Year categories. “It feels incredible,” Mars said. “That’s the song we worked the hardest on.

That’s our trophy right there.”

Mars performed on the awards telecast this past year, and with his six nominations he seems likely to be asked to play again this year. The Grammys are, of course, famed for their duets. If he could pick his dream partner, who would it be? “Prince, for sure,” he said. “If he’s listening, my number is 1-800-Grenade.”

Skrillex picked what might be a more obvious choice. “It would be cool to do something with the Doors, because I just did a track with them,” he told us, referring to his work with the classic band on the upcoming ReGeneration film.

Skrillex’s fellow Best New Artist nominees the Band Perry tipped their hand last night to their own perfect Grammy pairing when they threw a snippet of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin'” into their performance on the nominations special. “We ve always been in love with Tom Petty,” Kimberly Perry told Rolling Stone. “He s a huge influence of ours just his songwriting sensibility.”

Though the group has been performing the song since the summer, they have yet to hear from Petty.

They hope that will change, now that they have done it on national TV. “Our fingers are crossed anytime we play that live that someone who knows him or is a friend of someone will pass the word along,” Reid Perry says. “I guess you figured us out,” Kimberly added, laughing. “We simply played ‘Free Fallin” to try and get a response from Tom Petty.”

Firefighters from across Shropshire have been in Norfolk to help deal with the worst tidal surge to hit the east coast of England in more than 60 years.

Pumps, boats and a team of highly trained personnel, including a flood management expert and a welfare officer, left the county on Thursday evening after Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service requested help from across the country. They were sent to Gorleston Fire Station, up the coast from Great Yarmouth. There they met officers from Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Surrey, Berkshire, Staffordshire, Hertfordshire and Norfolk fire services where a massive emergency plan was formulated.

Group manager Shaun Baker, who is based at Shrewsbury Fire Station, was appointed one of four senior officers helping to co-ordinate the Norfolk operation.

Speaking on his return to Shropshire last night, Mr Baker said: The predictions from the Environment Agency and local emergency services was that there was going to be the worst tidal surge in 60 years. We went down at 4pm on Thursday and were held initially at a holding area.

We were then sent on to a fire station in Great Yarmouth and took with us boats and large volume pumping assets. Amongst us was both retained fire fighters and full-time firefighters.

Without the support of our employers, Shropshire would not have been able to offer the level of support they did.

The retained firefighters were able to drop everything and travel at a moment s notice. I helped with the planning of the possible evacuation of 9,000 people from the Great Yarmouth area. Fortunately we did not need to evacuate these people but we did have to carry out checks on flood defences in the area to check that they hadn t been breached and were holding firm.

Our main worry was the high tide, which was due at 11pm on Thursday and 11am yesterday morning.

However, the boat was not needed. Mr Baker described how a change in the weather provided a turn of fortune for the thousands of households in Great Yarmouth.

Mother Nature really helped us out. The water only needed about another inch before it would have been over the defences.

We were very, very fortunate.

Thousands of people who were evacuated from their homes will be assessing the damage after finally being allowed to return to their homes yesterday. The Environment Agency (EA) said 1,400 homes were flooded, including 300 in Boston, Lincolnshire, one of the worst affected areas. Improving weather last night saw flood waters recede in many areas, and the EA has removed more than 200 flood warnings, 106 in the Anglian area alone.

Emergency services downgraded risk levels, and the majority of people evacuated from their homes have left rest centres.

Devastated residents in Hemsby, Norfolk, watched their cliff-top homes disappear into the sea as the tidal surge hit on Thursday night. A lifeboat station was also reportedly washed into the sea.

Hundreds of people were evacuated in Boston, Lincolnshire and Clacton-on-Sea in Essex.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said two women, two babies in pushchairs and a dog were rescued after being hit by a large wave at Louisa Bay in Broadstairs, Kent.

The two people who died on Thursday were lorry driver Robert Dellow, 54, from Lowestoft in Suffolk, whose vehicle overturned in West Lothian, Scotland, and an 83-year-old man who was hit by a falling tree in Retford, Nottinghamshire.

Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes and two people have been killed as the worst tidal surge in 60 years sweeps down the British coast.

Emergency services have launched rescue operations as the severe weather, bringing hurricane-force winds and flooding, moves south from Scotland, which was hit by gusts of up to 142mph.

One man was killed when he was struck by a falling tree in a park in Retford, Nottinghamshire, and a lorry driver died when the HGV he was driving was blown on top of two cars on the A801 near Bathgate, West Lothian.

Four others were injured in the accident.

Prime Minister David Cameron has called two emergency meetings to discuss strategy.

Across England and Wales, the Environment Agency (EA) has issued more than 50 severe flood warnings, which are only issued when flooding poses a significant threat to life .

The severe warnings the highest category are in place for coastal areas in East Anglia, the Midlands and Kent.

The agency said communities along the North Sea coast from Northumberland to the Thames Estuary and Kent, in addition to those on the Irish Sea coast from Cumbria down to Cheshire, could see significant coastal flooding tonight and into Friday.

weather

The EA said in some areas sea levels could be higher than those during the devastating floods of 1953 which battered the east coast of England and claimed the lives of hundreds of people.

Defences built since then including the Thames and Hull barriers mean that many parts of the country are much better protected, he said.

However, some coastal flood defences could be overtopped by the combined effect of high tides, high winds and a large tidal surge, he said.

The Met Office said there had been severe gales of between 60mph and 80mph across Scotland and northern parts of England, and some mountainous regions in Aberdeenshire and Inverness-shire reported speeds of around 140mph.

In Norfolk, 9,000 homes are being evacuated as local officials attempt to stem the damage from the coastal surge.

The Ministry of Defence has also confirmed a small number of soldiers is helping the flood defence effort in Norfolk.

A further 1,000 properties are to be evacuated in affected areas in Suffolk and some residents in Jaywick, near Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, are also being urged to leave their homes.

Local officials are setting up emergency accommodation facilities and handing out sandbags to help people protect their homes, police said.

Police in Humberside have also declared an emergency situation as they prepared for coastal surges from this evening.

Residents in Rhyl, North Wales, have been ferried to safety from flooded homes by lifeboats as the storm battered the coast and flooded dozens of homes.

A school in the town also had to be evacuated because of fast-flowing water.

This evening, North Wales Police said the immediate risks caused by the high winds and tides had abated.

But Sky s Nick Martin, in Rhyl, said there was still much concern in the town about high tide, which is due around midnight.

There is a great deal of anxiety that they might see a repeat of what happened earlier as that surge broke through the sea defences and flooded about 70 homes, he said.

Many of the residents in Rhyl who have been affected are vulnerable and elderly.

Meanwhile, in north Norfolk, Allan Urquhart, who lives on the seafront at Blakeney, brought a rowing boat to the King s Arm pub to collect a friend.

I m going to row back to the house and we ll stay upstairs tonight, he said.

We ve put sandbags in place so hopefully we ll be ok, I m as confident as I can be.

It s very hard to tell exactly how many as it s impossible to get access to much of the village.

UK Hit By High Winds

Tidal floods were also expected in Germany and Scandinavia, together with freezing high winds from Greenland.

Across the UK, tens of thousands of properties have been hit by power cuts as winds battered powerlines.

The adverse weather has also caused chaos to the transport network.

This morning rail services for Scotland and parts of the north of England were suspended.

Trains were halted at their nearest stations and passengers told to disembark after Network Rail said debris on lines and damage to equipment meant it was not safe to operate any services.

National Rail said train services in Scotland and northern England are starting to run again as routes are cleared of debris.

A spokesman said that the network is also taking steps to prepare for the storm surge expected to hit the East of England tonight.

A number of flights have also been disrupted by the bad weather.

And closures, fallen trees, minor accidents and incidents of flash flooding are affecting the road network in many parts of the UK.
