Breckland burglary crackdown

7 February 2013

Police in Breckland are clamping down on burglars following a spate of crimes in the area.

Since the start of the year there has been a significant increase in the number of break-ins at business premises and from rural locations.

Now officers have launched Operation Bombay, specifically designed to prevent future burglaries and catch those committing the offences.

The operation started at the start of February and will focus on the Dereham and Swaffham areas where there has been the highest number of offences.

There have been nine offences recorded in Swaffham since the 1 January and 16 in Dereham.

The types of places affected by these crimes are mainly business locations and rural farms and outbuildings, including places like golf clubs, social clubs, industrial estates, building sites and derelict buildings.

With a significant number of large business units in the area, officers will be increasing their patrols around affected areas and working closely with both previous and potential victims to prevent future crimes.

Extra officers are being brought in and they will focus on the main transport links in the area and vulnerable locations.

They will also be offering crime prevention advice, including the following:

  • Regularly review your procedures to ensure that your property is well protected
  • Be on the look out for unusual or suspicious behaviour and contact the police
  • Encourage your staff to be security minded at work
  • Establish contact with all neighbouring businesses, stay in contact with the police and stop these criminals in their tracks
  • Security mark valuable equipment
  • Don t leave expensive items out on display
  • Remember to lock all doors and windows when the unit is unoccupied
  • Consider fitting tracker devices to plant, machinery and other vehicles.

For site-specific advice contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team on the non-emergency number 101.

101 is also the number to use to report any suspicious activity, of if you witness a crime in progress call us on 999.
