Firefighters from across Shropshire have been in Norfolk to help deal with the worst tidal surge to hit the east coast of England in more than 60 years.

Pumps, boats and a team of highly trained personnel, including a flood management expert and a welfare officer, left the county on Thursday evening after Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service requested help from across the country. They were sent to Gorleston Fire Station, up the coast from Great Yarmouth. There they met officers from Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Surrey, Berkshire, Staffordshire, Hertfordshire and Norfolk fire services where a massive emergency plan was formulated.

Group manager Shaun Baker, who is based at Shrewsbury Fire Station, was appointed one of four senior officers helping to co-ordinate the Norfolk operation.

Speaking on his return to Shropshire last night, Mr Baker said: The predictions from the Environment Agency and local emergency services was that there was going to be the worst tidal surge in 60 years. We went down at 4pm on Thursday and were held initially at a holding area.

We were then sent on to a fire station in Great Yarmouth and took with us boats and large volume pumping assets. Amongst us was both retained fire fighters and full-time firefighters.

Without the support of our employers, Shropshire would not have been able to offer the level of support they did.

The retained firefighters were able to drop everything and travel at a moment s notice. I helped with the planning of the possible evacuation of 9,000 people from the Great Yarmouth area. Fortunately we did not need to evacuate these people but we did have to carry out checks on flood defences in the area to check that they hadn t been breached and were holding firm.

Our main worry was the high tide, which was due at 11pm on Thursday and 11am yesterday morning.

However, the boat was not needed. Mr Baker described how a change in the weather provided a turn of fortune for the thousands of households in Great Yarmouth.

Mother Nature really helped us out. The water only needed about another inch before it would have been over the defences.

We were very, very fortunate.

Thousands of people who were evacuated from their homes will be assessing the damage after finally being allowed to return to their homes yesterday. The Environment Agency (EA) said 1,400 homes were flooded, including 300 in Boston, Lincolnshire, one of the worst affected areas. Improving weather last night saw flood waters recede in many areas, and the EA has removed more than 200 flood warnings, 106 in the Anglian area alone.

Emergency services downgraded risk levels, and the majority of people evacuated from their homes have left rest centres.

Devastated residents in Hemsby, Norfolk, watched their cliff-top homes disappear into the sea as the tidal surge hit on Thursday night. A lifeboat station was also reportedly washed into the sea.

Hundreds of people were evacuated in Boston, Lincolnshire and Clacton-on-Sea in Essex.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said two women, two babies in pushchairs and a dog were rescued after being hit by a large wave at Louisa Bay in Broadstairs, Kent.

The two people who died on Thursday were lorry driver Robert Dellow, 54, from Lowestoft in Suffolk, whose vehicle overturned in West Lothian, Scotland, and an 83-year-old man who was hit by a falling tree in Retford, Nottinghamshire.

Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes and two people have been killed as the worst tidal surge in 60 years sweeps down the British coast.

Emergency services have launched rescue operations as the severe weather, bringing hurricane-force winds and flooding, moves south from Scotland, which was hit by gusts of up to 142mph.

One man was killed when he was struck by a falling tree in a park in Retford, Nottinghamshire, and a lorry driver died when the HGV he was driving was blown on top of two cars on the A801 near Bathgate, West Lothian.

Four others were injured in the accident.

Thousands of homes in Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Kent are being evacuated as people across the east coast prepare for the surges that officials say could put lives at risk.

Prime Minister David Cameron has called two emergency meetings to discuss strategy.

Across England and Wales, the Environment Agency (EA) has issued more than 50 severe flood warnings, which are only issued when flooding poses a significant threat to life .

The severe warnings the highest category are in place for coastal areas in East Anglia, the Midlands and Kent.

The agency said communities along the North Sea coast from Northumberland to the Thames Estuary and Kent, in addition to those on the Irish Sea coast from Cumbria down to Cheshire, could see significant coastal flooding tonight and into Friday.

The EA said in some areas sea levels could be higher than those during the devastating floods of 1953 which battered the east coast of England and claimed the lives of hundreds of people.

Defences built since then including the Thames and Hull barriers mean that many parts of the country are much better protected, he said.

The tide comes over the sea wall in Blackpool

However, some coastal flood defences could be overtopped by the combined effect of high tides, high winds and a large tidal surge, he said.

The Met Office said there had been severe gales of between 60mph and 80mph across Scotland and northern parts of England, and some mountainous regions in Aberdeenshire and Inverness-shire reported speeds of around 140mph.

In Norfolk, 9,000 homes are being evacuated as local officials attempt to stem the damage from the coastal surge.

The Ministry of Defence has also confirmed a small number of soldiers is helping the flood defence effort in Norfolk.

A further 1,000 properties are to be evacuated in affected areas in Suffolk and some residents in Jaywick, near Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, are also being urged to leave their homes.

Local officials are setting up emergency accommodation facilities and handing out sandbags to help people protect their homes, police said.

Police in Humberside have also declared an emergency situation as they prepared for coastal surges from this evening.

In Newcastle, the pavement around the base of the Tyne Bridge, the Millennium Bridge and the city s Crown Court were left completely under water.

Northumbria Police warned people to take extra care in the adverse weather conditions.

A police spokesman said the places worst affected were Northumberland, North Tyneside and the Newcastle Quayside.

Residents in Rhyl, North Wales, have been ferried to safety from flooded homes by lifeboats as the storm battered the coast and flooded dozens of homes.

A school in the town also had to be evacuated because of fast-flowing water.

This evening, North Wales Police said the immediate risks caused by the high winds and tides had abated.

But Sky s Nick Martin, in Rhyl, said there was still much concern in the town about high tide, which is due around midnight.

There is a great deal of anxiety that they might see a repeat of what happened earlier as that surge broke through the sea defences and flooded about 70 homes, he said.

Many of the residents in Rhyl who have been affected are vulnerable and elderly.

Meanwhile, in north Norfolk, Allan Urquhart, who lives on the seafront at Blakeney, brought a rowing boat to the King s Arm pub to collect a friend.

I m going to row back to the house and we ll stay upstairs tonight, he said.

We ve put sandbags in place so hopefully we ll be ok, I m as confident as I can be.

This is the worst flooding I ve seen so it could be a difficult night for lots of people.

Sky s David Crabtree, in Blakeney, said: Quite a number of buildings in this very small community have been flooded.

It s very hard to tell exactly how many as it s impossible to get access to much of the village.

UK Hit By High Winds
A tree crushes a car in Glasgow

Tidal floods were also expected in Germany and Scandinavia, together with freezing high winds from Greenland.

Across the UK, tens of thousands of properties have been hit by power cuts as winds battered powerlines.

The adverse weather has also caused chaos to the transport network.

This morning rail services for Scotland and parts of the north of England were suspended.

Trains were halted at their nearest stations and passengers told to disembark after Network Rail said debris on lines and damage to equipment meant it was not safe to operate any services.

A driver had a lucky escape in Birmingham

National Rail said train services in Scotland and northern England are starting to run again as routes are cleared of debris.

A spokesman said that the network is also taking steps to prepare for the storm surge expected to hit the East of England tonight.

A number of flights have also been disrupted by the bad weather.

And closures, fallen trees, minor accidents and incidents of flash flooding are affecting the road network in many parts of the UK.

Cop demands compo amid claims nightclub’s burglar alarm caused …

A police officer1 is demanding compensation after claiming a nightclub s noisy burglar alarm damaged his hearing.

PC Darren Belford responded to a break-in at the bar in January and found the doors open and security system blaring

The Staffordshire Police2 officer claimed he suffered temporary hearing loss and tinnitus as it was set to an unsafe level .

The nightspot s co-director Pete Terry thought it was a wind-up when he got the legal letter.

Shock: Pete Terry, co-director of Gossip nightclub, thought the legal letter was a “wind-up”

He said: How can he sue us? This is part of his job. Police dedicate their lives to public service and that comes with risks.

This claim could be crippling for us.

The alarm at Gossip nightclub in Stoke was installed in September by SV Security Systems, which said it conformed to British standards.

Staffordshire Police distanced itself from the claim, which was made privately.

Concern: Mr Terry says the officer’s claim could be “crippling” for his business

Assistant Chief Constable Bernie O Reilly said: I do not generally support the principle of officers claiming compensation against victims of crime3.

Staffordshire Police Federation, which represents officers, also said it was not involved.

Chairman Andy Adams said: The public will see this as another member of the emergency services trying to get extra money and it doesn t reflect well on the rest of us.

Scene: PC Belford had responded to a break in at Gossip nightclub

But Mr Adams added that PC Belford was entitled to pursue a claim like every other member of the public.

In 2013, PC Kelly Jones planned to sue a garage owner in Thetford, Norfolk, after tripping on a kerb.

She later dropped the claim.

That same year it emerged a Suffolk officer won a 13,000 payout after injuring his big toe during health and safety training.

Scarcely a week goes by without news of yet another blaze raging at a recycling or waste plant. Costing the Fire Service and taxpayer a fortune and disrupting the lives of nearby residents, recycling plant fires are often extremely unpredictable and difficult to contain owing to the flammability of materials like timber and paper.

Locals often have to close windows and doors and remain in their homes for the duration of the fires, which typically burn for several days. Infernos and plumes of smoke can also threaten infrastructure such as buildings, roads and railways in high winds. …

Dr David Gold, a chartered safety and health practitioner and founder of Gold-Knecht Associates, wrote the following article for our sister site, SHP Online: Security guards, be they employees or persons employed by a contracted security service, have important responsibilities to fulfill.

A responsible security guard is trained and actively ensures that lives and property are protected from natural or human events, be they accidental or malicious. Similar to the role of the safety and health practitioner, the security should have the training (resulting in the knowledge and skills) and experience to prevent incidents from occurring as well as the competencies to intervene if an incident should occur. Thus the security guard must be able to continually focus on prevention, protection and emergency intervention in dealing with the protection of lives and property.

Arts 1 / Television 2 / Small Screen 3 Small Town Security : Claustrophobic, visually repellent, and really good Posted By Gwynedd Stuart 4 on 05.15.13 at 02:43 PM After I watched the second-season premiere of AMC’s Small Town Security 5 , I had a weird conversation with my mom. “I love them,” she said about the show’s cast. “I want to work with them. I want to live with them.” First of all, I had no idea how much she hates living with my dad. Second, that’s an emphatic endorsement from someone who tends to be unwilling to suspend disbelief long enough to enjoy a reality show.

I’m extremely willing if I’m entertained enough.

I watch this phony-baloney bullshit 6 . We still friends?

Oh, gooood. But it makes sense that a person could become attached to the cast of Small Town Security , because the show is fucking visceral: kind of stinky, claustrophobic, sometimes visually repellent, but in a way that makes you feel at home with a group of five strangers who operate a private security company in Ringgold, Georgia.

They sure feel at home with us.

Until last week, the only clip I’d seen of it involved its “star,” JJK Security matriarch Joan Koplan laughing until she pissed her pants 7 . The bulk of the show takes place inside the security company’s headquarters, a small clapboard house that’s too full full of people, full of stuff. Joan’s husband, Irwin, appears to be a hoarder.

Joan, a sixtysomething native New Yorker who belches and curses and has her own cable-access show (I just described my mother, by the way, up until the cable-access part), is perpetually glued to a sofa, and the action tends to revolve around her.

Is she slothful? No.

She has Parkinson’s disease. And what about Dennis, the security force’s lieutenant, who pays a bizarre amount of attention to married Joan, frequently kneeling down in front of her to rub her feet and legs?

Well, Dennis “D” for short is transgender and living as a man for the first time.

He and Joan are old friends and have a love for each other that appears to go a lot deeper than the superficial impropriety of some massages and hugs. Networks use the term “unscripted reality” really loosely. Maybe there’s no script, but c’maaan there’s some direction, an outline, guidance for what cast members need to accomplish over the course of a scene to keep the narrative moving.

The narrative they’re working on this season: in the wake of the first season, JKK’s business has suffered, because it turns out people don’t want their car dealerships being watched over by sentinels with bladder-control problems and cameras following them everywhere.

It’s the downside of sudden fame, the upside being that they’re for sure being compensated by the network. The “unscripted reality” ruse shouldn’t necessarily bother audiences.

It means the cast is in on it; we’re not just shameless gawkers. We’re getting to know these oddly interesting people in a controlled if unflinching way.

And now that I’ve gotten to know the Small Town Security cast, I can’t say I’d necessarily want to live with them.

But it’s fun to visit once in a while. Gwynedd Stuart writes about TV on Wednesdays. Share & Comment Police are also trying to trace a mystery western woman seen on CCTV running along the main street in the early hours on the night of the murders Source 1 VIEW GALLERY Murdered British backpacker Hannah Witheridge may have been raped by two local men, police in Thailand fear.

DNA found on her body came from two unknown Asian men, tests revealed. Detectives are also probing reports that she and fellow British victim David Miller, 24, were involved in a row in a bar with a local gangster, who had tried to chat Hannah up.

But there were fears the killer may already have fled the island of Koh Tao where the pair died. Police are also trying to trace a mystery western woman seen on CCTV running along the main street in the early hours on the night of the murders.

And they are probing claims a drug called ya ba may have been involved in the murder.

The pill is available in certain bars on the island along with crystal meth. Thailand s police chief Somyot Poompanmoung who flew to Koh Tao to oversee the investigation last night said the victims had been tested for drugs but he refused to disclose the results out of respect for the family . He added: We still don t know who did it but DNA tests show an Asian was responsible. “I don t know if the killer is still on the island.

We have some new leads but no new suspects.

I will do my best to solve this crime. “We are so sorry. He said Hannah s parents, who flew to Bangkok earlier in the week, had flown home and would not be visiting Koh Tao.

CCTV footage released showed Hannah of Hemsby, Norfolk, on the night of her murder, wearing a pink top and white skirt as she walked with friends. There were also new images of David and his friend Chris Ware, both from Jersey.

David reportedly left his hotel room to go and find Hannah at around 1am.

He is seen shaking hands with an unknown local man in a red shirt with the number 9 on the back. Later he is filmed with an unknown man and woman. Tragedy: Police fear the killer may already have fled the island of Koh Tao Police were examining the footage as it changed some of their thoughts on the timing of events on the night of the killings.

They now believe Hannah and David who met hours before they were killed enjoyed drinks together in Aussie expat haunt Choppers Bar and Grill before moving on to the AC nightclub.

They later wandered on to the beach where they were attacked. There were claims David may have been trying to save Hannah from her attacker.

The pair were bludgeoned to death early on Monday. A bloodied garden hoe was found nearby and police believe a second weapon was used.

The probe has been hampered by silence from locals.

A source said: There is a real underbelly on this island and no one is talking. People are afraid. “If the killer was a local, as many suspect, they just won t speak to the police. Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha has demanded fast action on tourist safety.

He said Thailand has no future if further incidents occur.

Metropolitan police officers on a stop and search operation in south London.

Photograph: John Stillwell/PA The new Stop and Search figures are out today. The data shows that out of all the searches made under Section 44(1) and (2) of the Terrorism Act none resulted in arrests for terrorism offences and less than 1% resulted in arrests for other offences.

We ve extracted some of the data for you from the excel document the Home Office published today. The data for searches made under terrorism legislation is broken down by police force and ethnicity for England and Wales between the financial year 2010-2011.

It shows that most searches made under terrorism legislation were conducted in London by the Metropolitan Police (9,913 out of 11,792).

It also shows that none of the searches made under terrorism legislation in Wales resulted in any arrests, with just 79 of all such searches resulting in arrests for other offences. Stop and search has always been a controversial area. In January 2009, the Government s anti-terror policy was thrown into turmoil after the European Court of Human Rights ruled that police who use Section 44 without grounds for suspicion are violating individual freedoms and acting illegally.

Until it was repealed in March last year, Section 44 allowed any police force authorised by the home secretary to randomly stop and search any person or vehicle on suspicion of terrorism.

Section 47A took its place afterwards. In addition to terrorism legislation, stops and searches are also performed under Section 1 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) and Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994.

As Section 1 is the most general, it has recorded the most incidents: no less than 1,205,495 last financial year, or 94.42% of the total searchs. While searches under Section 1 of PACE can be made by any officer, searches under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 need to have the authorisation of a more senior officer, because they usually involve suspicion of a serious violence.

Last year these amounted to 60,180.

Although considerably fewer than the more general Section 1 searches these were still almost six times the searches under terrorism legislation. Furthermore as the graph below shows, stops and searches made under Section 1 of PACE are at their highest since 2001. Section 60 searches have almost halved compared to the previous year and Section 44 searches are at their lowest since 2001.

Still if we take individual sections into account, and as the graph below shows, under Section 60 a similar number of arrests were made for both white and black people, while arrests for asians amounted to half of this number; 505, 532 and 204 respectively. Whether it s due to population, local economy, or the cost of living, not every city can offer the same level of job opportunity as another.

Here are the U.S. cities that offer the best chance for finding a job right now.

A recent report from Glassdoor 1 , the job search and review web site, compared U.S. cities based on their population, the number of job openings available, the median home value, and the median base salary.

They also included a job satisfaction rating based on reviews from thousands of local employees.

Based on their scale, they came up with the top 25 cities for finding a job.

Here are the top five: Raleigh, NC Kansas City, MO Oklahoma City, OK Austin, TX Seattle, WA It s not surprising to see Raleigh at the top with tech companies like IBM, Cisco, and SAS setting up shop there.

It doesn t hurt that the area is affordable to buy a home and live in either.
